Into the Millenium - Summary (archived)

Into the millennium consolidates and expands on Operation Black Vote's work since its launch in July 1996, taking the campaign to the next anticipated General Election in 2001.

Into the millennium assesses what has been achieved so far and outlines our plans for the future that include:

  • Citizenship in the community - a long term political education campaign

  • Young Citizens - a long term political education project focused on young people, Black and White;

  • Voter registration - the existing campaign continues, monitored to provide empirical data;

  • Improving Black representation - encouraging Black people to stand for election and to seek public appointment;

  • The Greater London Authority - ensuring that the issues of race and colour are on the agenda in the run up to the election of the first Greater London Authority, during the election period and in the Authority's first term of office;

  • Black Women - bringing together women from different communities to ensure that OBV's direction encompasses their concerns, increasing levels of representation and acting as an independent advisor to government;

  • In Cyberspace - Black voices on the internet, harnessing the IT explosion to communicate OBV's message locally, nationally and internationally.
