One Hand Can't Clap from Leytonstone is celebrating after being named as one of the winners of a prestigious Wavemakers Award, presented at a Showcase held at Sound Nightclub in London earlier this month. This winning project was chosen from nearly a hundred inspirational entries sent in by children and young people across the UK. Lorlett Hudson, a participant on OBV's Magistrate Shadowing Scheme set up the winning project One Hand Can't Clap in 2000 as an innovative and unique way to connect with disengaged youth, particularly boys. The organisation uses role models, self-awareness, story-telling, culture and history facilitated by the highly individual 'Things Mama Used to Say' proverb cards. Through its inventive methods One Hand Can't Clap allows de-motivated young people to have a voice and to share and discuss issues that affect them in their everyday lives. Ultimately One Hand Can't Clap works towards reconnecting individuals with themselves, each other and their environment. On winning a Wavemakers Award, Jordan Bovell a young boy who is part of the One Hand Can't Clap project said, "I feel really good, before the project I used to think what am I doing? So I'm really pleased I've done something for myself and now I'm going somewhere." Hosted by TV presenter Tania Bryer, the showcase was also attended by The Rt. Hon. Sir John Major, and Wavemakers' celebrity ambassadors Rudolph Walker. Lorlett Hudson, Founder of One Hand Can't Clap said," The purpose of the scheme is to connect our community again and proverbs are a powerful way to share our history. The proverbs are entertaining and make people laugh, but ultimately they educate and inform ".
