Labour MP for Brent South. Entered Parliament on 5 May 2005 - General election. Dawn Petula Butler (born 3 November 1969) is a British Labour politician and Member of Parliament for Brent South. She was born in London to Jamaican immigrant parents into a large family with a sister and four brothers.Dawn is one of only two black woman MP's at Westminster having succeeded Paul Boateng in Brent South when he stood down to become British High Commissioner to South Africa and was the first ever black woman to be elected to a british goverment. Dawn has served as an advisor to the Ken Livingstone Mayor of London on employment and social issues and is currently a member of the Select Committee on Modernisation of the House of Commons and an active member of the GMB union. Dawn is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Youth Affairs, and is an Honorary Vice President of the British Youth Council. On 27 June 2007, Butler was made one of the Labour Party's six Vice Chairs, with particular responsibility for Youth issues. In 2009 she launched Bernie's list which is an initiative to help elect Black and Asian individuals. She was named MP of the year in march 2009. Houses of Parliament Tel: 020 7219 4385 Did you know?
