Parmjit Dhanda

Labour MP for Gloucester.

Entered Parliament on 7 June 2001 - General election.

Mr Dhanda went to school in Mellow Lane comprehensive school, before going on to study engineering at Nottingham University and gaining an MSc in Information Technology.

A year after leaving university, Parmjit was appointed as one of the Labour Party's organisers. In 1998, he went on to work for Connect - the union for professionals in communications - and became the Assistant National Organiser.

After joining the Labour Party in 1988, Mr Dhanda's political experience includes volunteering and campaigning for his local Labour Party branch, and being elected as a councillor for the London borough of Hillingdon.

On 5 May 2005 Parmjit was re-elected as the MP for Gloucester with an increased majority - one of the few seats in the country to have a swing from Tory to Labour. In the following reshuffle he was appointed to the Government as a Whip. In the May 2006 reshuffle, he was privileged to be appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Children, Young People and Families

Parmjit is now Under-Secretary of State for Cohesion and Neighbourhoods in the Department of Communities and Local Government.
