OBV responds to Nick Cohen's Evening Standard article
20-02-2008--

Nick Cohen’s attack of Operation Black Vote undermines a decade of our excellent work, and plays fast and loose with Lee Jaspers’s interview in the Voice.

Every mainstream political party leader has worked with and applauded the efforts of OBV. We have worked tirelessly to encourage and inspire Black communities to engage in the political process and participate in wider civic engagement. Our non-partisan position is unblemished. We have nurtured and supported Black individuals from all the political parties. Many are now councilors, some will be fighting in the next general election with the real prospect of becoming Westminster MPs.

In the interview that Jasper gave to the Voice newspaper, Cohen mischievously splices two very distinct answers Jasper gave to concoct a proposition that OBV was being hijacked to aide Ken Livingstone. Throughout every election campaign OBV has maintained its high standard of judging candidates and their parties impartially. That will not change.

We are aware that these Mayoral elections have engendered a campaigning climate that is bitter and unscrupulous. Those engaged in that political war care not one jot for the dedicated individuals they tarnish and insult (such as OBV staff) who are passionate about Black communities playing a positive role in making society better.

I would like to see The Evening Standard apologise but I don’t expect it.
