Charity event to benefit Lupus UK

On 7 December 2011 a charity event for Lupus UK will take place in Catford, Lewisham.

Called "Wednesday Night Live," the event is organised by Mike Lewis, a member of Lewisham's Black Staff Forum and a graduate of OBV's Lewisham Civic Leadership Programme 2010 which seeks to address the underrepresentation of Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) individuals in Lewisham's political and civic framework.

"Wednesday Night Live" will feature music by Asha Keys and other guests. Proceeds from ticket sales will go towards Lupus UK, an organisation that raises awareness for individuals living with lupus. It is the only national registered charity in Britain that supports people with systemic lupus and discoid lupus and also helps people who are approaching a diagnosis.

Lupus is an autoimmune disease that, for unknown reasons, causes the immune system to attack the body's own tissues and organs, including the joints, kidneys, heart, lungs, brain, blood and skin. If left untreated, lupus can prove fatal. It has been estimated that 50,000 people are afflicted by some form of lupus in the UK.

Lewis commented,

This particular disease particularly affects African and Caribbean people, and it is more common than well-known diseases such as leukemia and multiple sclerosis.

He added that one of the reasons why lupus does not get the same attention as other diseases is because of who it strikes.

Being a graduate of OBV's Lewisham leadership programme, I happened to witness the makeup of the health board, and what was obvious was that one of the reasons why lupus doesn't get the same funding as other diseases is that there is nobody who is African or Caribbean sitting on the health board. This event is really just to raise awareness and to raise valuable funds.

Lewis also stated that "Wednesday Night Live" will be a mix of business and pleasure, with a presentation by the charity and then performances by first-class music acts.
