OBV initiate Mary Seacole Petition

in

Due to the overwhelming response to yesterday’s story and conversations with a number of people such as Patrick Vernon who established 100 Great Black Briton’s we’ve decided to initiate a petition to the Secretary of State for Education to reconsider putting Mary Seacole back on the Curriculum.

As you will know, petitions are only note worthy when you respond; when we tell our Government that we care about Mary Seacole and we care about having diversity in our children’s education.

Please sign our petition and use your networks and friends to get them to sign too:

Keep Mary Seacole on national curriculum

It is not a secretary of state for educations place to define detail of the curriculum in order to meet an ideological agenda. Our children are diverse in culture and background and our curriculum needs to reflect that diversity.

Mary Seacole

She has done much more or even more than dear Florence

Mary Seacole

Mary Seacole is a true heroine and is now firmly established as an important part of our history......Her selfless dedication to others is a fine example to everybody of the human spirit in face of aderversity. It is disgraceful that she is being removed from the National curriculum

Michael Gove can't stop us from teaching our children history...

If the Government think they can censor, or even delete our history, they are so wrong. The whole decision to remove Mary Seacole is a blatant "racist" decision from a Conservative fascist. Check out this link, read it and if your children are in secondary school, let them read it... Taking Mary off the curriculum is not just an insult to Jamaicans, it's not just an insult to the black British, it's an insult to us all as it takes away some of the history of Newcastle and London. It takes away some of our military history as well. Mary is a part of our heritage and no fascist Government should get away with insulting it's own nation.

MARY SEACOLE

Thank You kindly Esther for the link. The Education Secretary has clearly displayed very bad judgement and extremely poor thinking in his decision to Remove Mary Secole's exemplary work from the National Curriculum. Mr. Gove seems to have forgotten the kind of society he is a part of and what his mandate is. Mr. Gove should remember we are paying him to help build a stronger more cohesive society and due to our belief in his ability we have entrusted him to supervise one of the most important offices of any Nation. It’s Education on which the future well being of that Nation depends.
There is absolutely no genuine need or reason for him to gamble so carelessly with the cohesion of our society. Removing such a vital part of our history from the Curriculum is embarrassingly un wise. This is a multiracial and multicultural nation and the removal of a beacon, a stalwart, a light that illuminates the path to greater cohesion is completely wrong. This decision must be rescinded.
Mary Secole’s name and work should all ways be remembered and respected by our nation just like that of Sir Winston Churchill’s. The fact that Mary was a black West Indian Lady is even more important that the records of her heroism remain a part of the national curriculum. Her efforts amidst the odds on the frontline have helped to secure the victory resulting in the peace we all enjoy today.
Her work and memory cannot be brushed aside by a Politician that has never been to War or has ever worked as a frontline War Nurse. A Politician whose commitment and judgement is now in doubt.
Mary Secole is too important to our Nation’s history to be casually brushed aside by any Education Secretary. It is too late now for us to be trying to hide from our heritage. The Secretary may not like or probably scared of what Mary represents. However what is is. We must accept and grow.
There are millions of black, brown, and white girls and women that are and will be inspired by Mary’s commitment and devotion to duty. The way we wage wars today may not require Mary’ approach any more but her devotion to unselfish care for our armed forces is an attribute of humanity that education can help to enhance.
Mr. Gove should pay more attention to the responsibilities of the great ministry we have entrusted him with rather than be making such poor and erroneous decisions. I am suggesting Mr. Gove leave the comfort zone take more time and consult more widely before he takes these very serious decisions that have far reaching implications on the Nation’s future well being.

Learn about Marcus Garvey not Mary Seacole

As a black carribean profgessions I am tired of May Seacole
Mary Seacole is a poor role model too subservient.
Now the great Marcus Garvey has a powerful message for todays youth and also study of some great Egyptian Pharoahs eg Menes that what aour youth needs , but the authorites dont want us to learn about great blacks which is why they promoted Mary Seacole . Neverthless I will suppoer petition as hse is better than nothing !!Truth is we blacks need to learn our history for ourselves we cannot trust other races to that .

Petition mary

We cannot afford for our history been brush a side

GOVE IT A REST

If Mr Gove spent MORE time thinking about Mary Seacole and her awesome contribution the history, welfare and nursing and LESS time defending sexual predators, the world might be a better place.
