Inspiring a Generation: Black Social Entrepreneurs lead the way in community engagement

The event titled, 'The Search of the UK's Jay-Z' is part of a series of roadshow's where OBV will be touring the UK to register Black Minority Ethnic people preceding the next General election. With the current financial crisis, leading social entrepreneurs will discuss how young people can overcome financial barriers to achieve their full potential.

Speakers included; Jordan Kensington CEO of Invincible Media, Councillor Florence Nosegbe, Lee Jasper, Co-founder Equanomics, Jessica Huie, Social Entrepreneur and CEO of ColorBlind Cards and Natasha Faith CEO La Diosa,

Young people, community activists, council members and people who work in youth service provision were present at the event. Operation Black Votes mission is to emulate the US tradition of celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King's legacy and to galvanise British citizens to support the teachings and philosophy of Dr. King in all our institutions including schools, colleges, Local Authorities, faith groups and other Government departments.

In early 2009, we will be holding an international conference to celebrate Dr. King.

Simon Woolley, OBV Director said; "Black Minority Ethnic non-voter registration is four times lower than in wider society. It is critical that we play a full and positive role in the democratic process and to hold to account the politicians who seek to represent us. This project will help do that by establishing a permanent voter registration drive in the week commemorating Dr Martin Luther King's birthday in January.

Jessica Huie, Entrepreneur and CEO of ColorBlind cards said: "I have learned that there are two kinds of people: people who are happy to settle for a wage and get by and people who want considerably more and go out and get it. ColorBlind cards is a testament to this. I would encourage all would-be entrepreneurs to never expect anything less than what you think you're worth".

Natasha faith, CEO of La Diosa said: "OBV is an excellent project that opens up the young minds of our community. I was honoured to talk with such an ambitious group of people. There is a burning desire for young people to be understood and get their views across, OBV is a great catalyst for that."
