Claude Moraes, MEP

Claude Moraes was born in Aden, Yemen in 1965. He attended Dundee University, London University and Postgraduate study of international law at London School of Economics.

He is a member of the Labour Party and was political advisor to Rt. Hon. Dr. John Reid, MP and Paul Boateng, MP. Mr Moraes' achievements include being Director of the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants, as well as Commissioner for the Commission of Racial Equality.

One of the first Asian MEPs ever elected to the European Parliament, he was previously Director of JCWI, the national immigration and refugee charity. Before that, he was a national officer at the TUC, a representative to the European TUC, House of Commons adviser to MPs John Reid and Paul Boateng, and a CRE Commissioner. With a legal background, he has campaigned and written widely on human rights issues and recently co-authored the 'Politics of Migration'

He has held various posts within the London Labour Party, and currently serves as vice-Chair of the delegation for relations with the Arab Peninsula. He also serves as a member on the committees of Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs and the Special Committee of Organised Crime, Corruption and Money Laundering.
