Regional Hubs

This project aims to boost civic participation among Black and Asian communities, fostering a more engaged and representative electorate. To achieve this, OBV will collaborate closely with community anchors. These initiatives will strengthen OBV's role in advocating for racial justice and democratic reform while maintaining engagement beyond election cycles to promote systemic change in our communities.

Encouraging Black and Asian individuals to engage in politics is often challenging. We believe these challenges stem from several factors, one of which is the difficulty in obtaining information about how the system operates, often hindered by various barriers. This acts as a deterrent, leading individuals to feel overwhelmed by the effort required to even know where to start in becoming involved.

This systemic issue has resulted in a lack of representation for Black and Asian communities in the political process. Furthermore, it also discourages our communities from engaging with local issues where they could drive change, as they do not perceive the system as welcoming. Even when they do attempt to participate, they find little support and guidance to help them succeed.

Who is the Humanity Project (HP)?

HP is an organisation that champions structured deliberative assemblies. Unlike Citizens’ Assemblies, Popular Assemblies prioritise grassroots participation and direct democracy.

Research shows that deliberation helps shift perspectives, increase empathy, and reduce cognitive bias.

Project Objectives
(01)
Working with Community Leaders
OBV will identify regional areas that represent democratic diversity and have significant Black and Asian populations. In collaboration with community leaders, we will prepare overview reports for each city that outline barriers to democratic participation, highlight racial inequalities, and suggest practical solutions for enhancing community engagement and increasing electoral turnout. We aim to engage faith organisations, local charities, youth community groups, and cultural associations to ensure we reach a wide range of people who can get involved.
(02)
Creating the Hub
OBV will partner with local communities to establish an online hub tailored to the specific region. The hubs will include content on resources, training opportunities, and toolkits to empower local community organisations to maintain engagement during and beyond election cycles.
(03)
Community Engagement
OBV will assist communities in launching the hub to unite community leaders and residents, raising awareness of the resources available and how to become involved.

Project Outcomes

The establishment of regional hubs in the UK

An online hub dedicated to offering voter education and resources that promote civic participation tailored to the unique needs of each community.

Support local community leaders in co-creating and developing collaborative spaces for workshops, voter drives, and community events that offer tailored civic engagement throughout the year.

Encouraging local community leaders to collaborate in sharing resources and knowledge about civic participation while connecting with other regions to streamline national engagement activities.

How The Project Will Be Delivered

01
Partnership Working

We will engage with local community leaders in the region to collaboratively design the hub based on the requirements derived from community insights.

02
Gathering insights

The consultation process will involve running online workshops, conducting surveys, and holding in-person meetings with community leaders and residents. By using various engagement methods, OBV will ensure that all community members, especially those who are often underserved, can participate in the hub's design.

03
Development of the Hub

The online hub will be developed based on insights and input from the local community. This will involve user testing to ensure it is fit for purpose and meets the needs of the community.

04
Launching the Hub

The online hub will be launched with an in-person event where people can celebrate achievements and, most importantly, agree on how the hub will be developed and maintained to ensure its ongoing success.

Sustainability

Regional hubs have been and will remain a key aspect of OBV's core work. After completing this specific project, we will continue to develop regional hubs across the country through the next election cycle and beyond. This is central to OBV's mission, and this effort will be integrated into our strategic plans, executed in partnership with community leaders and supported by our political partners to mobilise and amplify the democratic voice of Black and Asian communities.
