Community Alliance Lewisham turn focus to stop and search and county lines in virtual event
Community Alliance Lewisham (CAL) is a community group comprising Lewisham locals who are invested in minority ethnic engagement in the local community.
Their main aims in supporting the ethnic minority groups in the community include dispensing information, signposting and hosting informative events with a key focus on the areas of mental health, employment and education.
The group have been meeting monthly since their 2016 inception with their initial focus has been on building solid foundations and a strong network.
OBV documented the groups work in the community late last year.
On 30th March 2021, CAL is facilitating a virtual event on Stop and Search and Understanding the Culture of County Lines.
The tragic and untimely death of George Floyd and other incidents during 2020 highlighted the continual structural inequalities and discrimination that is experienced by the BAME community. Therefore, keeping safe and knowing your rights in relation to racial bias and the law has never been more important.
Barristers Stephen Akinsanya (a member of the 2021 Pathway to Success cohort) and Mark Robinson will cover the following areas during their presentation:
- Why can I be stopped and searched
- What does ‘reasonable grounds’ mean?
- What are my rights?
- What does joint enterprise mean?
A quiz session, useful signposting to external resources and a Q&A session will also form part of the event.

A call to action...
For nearly 25 years OBV have fought to ensure black and minority ethnic participation and representation in civic society. Efforts in continuing to do so though, relies on your help. That way we can continue this fight for greater race equality. What would give us a tremendous boost is if today, you made that small donation yourselves, but even more importantly if you encouraged others to do likewise.
