The Lawrence Review into Covid19: A Race Equality plan is needed

in

In complete opposite to the Government's latest Covid report into disproportionate BAME deaths and its wider impact, The Baroness Lawrence review written for the Labour party clearly cites the persistent racial inequalities within our society that have exacerbated the pandemics devastating impact on BAME communities.

In her report Baroness Lawrence highlights inequality in jobs, low pay and zero hour contracts as some of the areas that have left BAME individuals overly exposed to the virus. She also cites poor housing and inequality in health as other key factors.

Adopting OBV’s long standing call for a Covid -19 Race Equality strategy, Lawrence claims the need is greater than ever.

The irony of the Government’s position is that in the detail of their document they also cite areas such as ‘deprivation, jobs and poor housing’ as factors that have disproportionately impacted BAME communities in regards to Covid-19.

Their monstrous different conclusions coming from the Government therefore seem ideologically driven rather than evidence based.

As a result the Government’s action plan does not include tackling systemic race inequality, but rather wholly blaming BAME communities telling us to ‘eat better and do more exercise’.

With other party leaders set to wade into this important debate the Government must do the right thing and acknowledge the facts – systemic race inequality is a factor. They must and have a plan to resolve it.

A call to action...

For 24 years OBV have fought to ensure black and minority ethnic participation and representation in civic society. Efforts in continuing to do so though, relies on your help. That way we can continue this fight for greater race equality. What would give us a tremendous boost is if today, you made that small donation yourselves, but even more importantly if you encouraged others to do likewise.
