Dawn Butler wins Brent Central nomination

Former Government Minister Dawn Butler defied her critics by once again winning the nomination to stand as the Labour Party candidate for Brent Central. In 2010 Butler lost the seat during a fierce contest with Liberal Democrat Sarah Teather. Butler always contested that she should be given a second chance to win back the seat, but at every juncture she faced stiff opposition.

But having come through this latest battle, Butler expressed her gratitude in a letter to her prospective constituents:

I'm writing to thank Brent Central members for once again placing your trust and faith in me by selecting me as your Prospective Parliamentary Candidate (PPC) for the 2015 election yesterday.

It was a well conducted campaign with quality candidates and I thank all voters who took the time to partake in the process. It is a great honour to be chosen as your PPC, but also one which carries great responsibility, I shall not let you down. As promised my campaign begins today and it will not end till the Lib Dems are defeated.”

Sarah Teather MP announced earlier this year that she would not be standing for re-election citing the Coalitions stance on immigration issues as a deep disillusion with front-line politics.

Brent Central is a marginal seat and once again will be fiercely contested. I will not be surprised if all three political parties put up BME candidates for this seat.

But right now well done to Dawn Butler, she showed great tenacity in not giving up, at times against the odds.
