Valerie Amos

Baroness Amos was educated at Townley Grammar School for Girls and has earned a BA in sociology, an MA in cultural studies and did doctoral research at the University of East Anglia.

Her career achievements include working with London boroughs Lambeth, Camden and Hackney, as well as serving as the Chief Executive of the Equal Opportunities Commission.

Baroness Amos has served as the Government Spokesperson on Social Security, International Development and Women's Issues, among other issues and areas of concern.

Baroness Amos was the first Black woman in cabinet and served as Secretary of State for International Development from May - September 2003 and Leader of the House of Lords from September 2003 - June 2007.
