Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi MP (Labour)

Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi is the Labour MP for Slough and was elected in the December 2019 General Election receiving 29,421 votes, which equaled a 57.6% majority.

Tanmanjeet is the UK’s first turbaned Sikh MP. He is also a graduate of the OBV Parliamentary Shadowing Scheme.

Although born in Slough, Tanmanjeet’s family hails from Raipur in Jalandhar, Punjab. At the age of X Tanmanjeet went to Jalandhar to receive his primary education. After, he returned to Slough and served as “Head Boy” in his secondary school. Upon finishing, Tanmanjeet went on to study Mathematics and Management at the University College London before studying Applied Statistics at Keble College, Oxford University. After graduating, Tanmanjeet furthered his education at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, where he studied the history and politics of South Asia.

Before embarking on his political career, Tanmanjeet not only worked in his father’s family business but also opened a construction company with his wife. In 2007, Tanmanjeet was then elected to Gravesham Borough Council, and in 2011 was re-elected. At this time, Tanmanjeet was also unanimously elected Mayor of Gravesham, and thus became Europe’s youngest Sikh Mayor. Subsequently, in 2012 Tanmanjeet was elected as the Shadow Cabinet Member within the council and held responsibility for Business and the Community Portfolio. 

Tanmanjeet is happily married with two sons, and is “humbled and honoured” to serve as MP in his hometown, Slough.
