Realising the Dream - Rally

Realising The Dream

In the run up to the general and local council elections OBV invited US civil rights activist and former Presidential candidate Rev Al Sharpton to spearhead the OBV and Electoral Commission pre-election rally, held in central London.

Sharpton told the packed rally of almost 2,000 people: “At a time when we can elect Presidents, there is no excuse for us to be sitting down and not doing anything. There are enough Black people in Britain to make a difference.”

Sharpton inspired his audience to wake up to the power of the Black vote, urging people to become more politically active.

The voter registration rally helped to increase sign-up and turnout at the 2010 elections.

Preparing them for future political engagement, during his visit Rev Sharpton also addressed an assembly of 500 young students at Archbishop Tenison’s school in Lambeth, south London.
